In 1984 NiNCOM released the arcade game Janey Thomson's Marathon to tie in with the promising US long distance Runners imminent appearance at the Los Angeles Olympics Games.
However, its gruelling gameplay led to reports of children being hospitalised with exhaustion and parents in Idaho and Florida sued NiNCOM, settling out of court the following year for an undisclosed sum.
Subsequently the game proved a disastrous commercial failure, partly due to the potential length of each attempt but also Thompson's eventual withdrawal from the Games after an agonising should injury was sustained playing the game at a promotional even. Janey never ran competitively again.
NiNCOM recalled all the machines from arcades and a tense press conference a senior executive promised that all would be destroyed as the company attempted to "flush away the stench of failure"
But now, thanks to researchers for TV channel E4, an original machine has been found in the private collection of an undisclosed German gamer and Retro Reunited can finally bring this lost classic to a new generation. In the interests of preservation the boffins at E4 Games have managed to reverse engineer the complicated arcade architecture and produce a one of a kind 2nd Janey Thompson machine and both will be on display at the show before being returned to the showroom of the secretive collector.
Over the course of the weekend we will be running a stamina test to see which set of gaming fans are the greatest. Visitors will get the chance to play on both of the machines and have their score and their computer/console allegiance recorded. At the end of the show the individuals with the 3 furthest recorded distance will be crowned champions (and receive an appropriate medal) and the computer or console with the greatest aggregate distance will be declared the greatest and forever live in glory! Don't miss your one time only chance to play a peice of gaming history!
